Difference Between Open & Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation Open and closed cell spray foam insulation can be used for a range of
different applications across all domestic and commercial properties. However,
it is important to know what type of spray foam insulation you require and
therefore this can always be used effectively. Pro Spray Foam
Insulations provide both open and closed cell spray foam insulation
throughout Ireland. We can always discuss your requirements and advise you on
the best option.
Open Cell Insulation Open
cell spray foam insulation is used within residential properties. It is
suitable for the attic, floor and wall insulation. Open cell spray foam can be used
to fill all the nooks and crannies throughout your property and will expand to
over 200 times its size. As open cell foam is full of cells that are not
completely encapsulated, this leaves them open and makes the foam much softer
and flexible. This is what makes expansion so easy.
As any moisture or damp can become very hazardous, it is
important to apply open cell insulation so the moisture removes the property.
As Irish Building Regulations state a 50mm air gap must be maintained between
insulation material and roofing felt, spray foam can help you achieve this,
allowing moisture to pass through your rafters, foam and then leave the
building. As the foam is open, this makes it easier for the moisture to pass
through.
Closed Cell Insulation Closed
cell insulation is just as effective, however, has very different purposes to
open cell insulation. Closed cell spray foam is most ideal for encapsulation of
asbestos sheds. Used across commercial and agricultural sheds, in addition to
shipping containers, asbestos roofs, walls and all metal and concrete surfaces,
we make sure this is always applied correctly. When applied, closed spray foam
is also beneficial as it will strengthen the structure of your building.
Unlike open cell, closed spray foam is made up of cells that
are completely closed. As they are pressed together, less air and moisture is
able to get inside the foam and pass through. This makes it much more stable
and rigid and therefore suitable for insulation in some areas of the property
and to prevent issues like asbestos. Closed cell foam is designed to expand to
about 1” of thickness once sprayed, compared to open cell foam’s 3”.
When To Use Open & Closed Cell Insulation If you notice issues with the insulation in your property,
it is important to know whether to use open or closed cell insulation. Whilst both
methods will effectively insulate the property, we can always advise you what
is the best option for your specific situation.
Open cell spray foam will be used on all timber frame construction
and primarily used for home insulation, which includes attics, walls and
floors. As the spray foam still offers airtightness but allows water vapour to
pass through, this is the best option for all homes. This should be very
beneficial in reducing heating bills and delivering great U value, increasing
the value of your home and making the property much nicer to live in.
Closed cell spray foam is dense enough to insulate air,
prevent drafts and maintains regulated temperatures. This will also prevent the
growth of mould due to its improved temperature control. With this also being
used to deal with asbestos, it is a much tighter option to prevent anything from passing
through the insulation in commercial properties.
Spray Foam Benefits Open and closed cell spray foam both have their own
benefits. Closed cell foam is the best choice for robust insulation where space
may be an issue. Closed cell foam offers:
2x The R-Value of Open Cell In Standard Walls E84 Fire Rated Versions Available Improve Structural Integrity Perfect Fir All-Weather Temperatures Unharmed By Water Damage Vapour Barrier This makes it ideal for many properties, however, we will
still advise you on the best for your property, as open cell foam has several
benefits, including:
